Benefits of Grapefruit Oil

Exodus 35:28
And spices and oil for the light, and for the anointing oil, and for the fragrant incense.

There are many uses for essential oil and many listed in the bible.  You can use essential oils to fragrance your home naturally, for aroma therapy, in your bath tub, in  home made cleaners, and even cooking and flavoring water.

One of my new favorites is Grapefruit oil.  It has lots of benefits.  Besides making my water smell and taste wonderful with only 3 drops per glass, it has bonus effects on the body.

I first purchased it to use in my homemade cleaners for fragrances.  Then, I recently read an article about all it's health benefits so I have started using it for so much more.  Grapefruit Essential Oil is cold pressed from the rind of the grapefruit.

Benefits of Grapefruit Oil

Diuretic Properties

Grapefruit essential oil is offered by naturopaths as a diuretic to reduce bloating and fluid retention.  Just put 2-3 drops in 8 ounces of water.  It taste and smells just wonderful!

Anti-Cellulite Treatment
Claims are made by a number of body care product manufacturers that grapefruit essential oil combats cellulite. While the FDA does not recognize these claims, there seems to be evidence that grapefruit essential oil does reduce swelling, which could temporarily reduce the appearance of "orange peel" skin.  Be sure to use a carrier oil to rub it in with like olive or sunflower oil.

Increase Immunity

The essential oil from grapefruit comes from its peel. The entire grapefruit is known for its antioxidant properties and includes the oil extracted from the outer layer. High in vitamin C, the oil of the fruit provides your system with components that fight free radicals that get in the body primarily from environmental pollution. Antioxidants are useful for fighting the signs of aging in the skin, cells, muscles, eyes and ears.

Skin Care

Acidic fruits, such as grapefruit, dry out the skin and can be particularly useful if you have trouble with acne. Grapefruit oil applied to the face dries out the excess oil that causes pimples and shrinks pores to prevent dirt and dead skin cells from forming blackheads and whiteheads. The oil from grapefruit may sting a little when applied to fresh skin, but it also leaves a tingling, fresh feeling.

Disinfectant

The properties in grapefruit oil fight both viral and bacterial germs both inside and outside the body. Used externally, the oil is used to treat skin infections and sores in your mouth. Taken internally, grapefruit oil may relieve colon or stomach infections, kidney, excretory and urinary infections.

Anti-Oxidant Effects

Anti-oxidants neutralize free radicals that damage skin and other organs and that speed up the signs of aging. Grapefruit essential oil is rich in vitamin C, a recognized and respected anti-oxidant, and topical application of grapefruit essential oil can boost the skin's regenerative abilities.  I put a few drops of grapefruit and orange oil in my homemade oil cleanser.

Hair Tonic
Naturopaths recommend grapefruit essential oil to treat dandruff and to promote healthy hair follicles. It is used as part of a hair care regimen to treat oily hair and to promote shine.
